Why Golf Transfers Need Different Vehicles (The Equipment Reality)
We’ve been doing golf course transfers since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And here’s what most golfers don’t realise when they first call. Golf bags are massive.
Standard saloon boot fits 2 suitcases. One golf bag usually fits diagonally if you angle it right. But two golf bags? Forget it. The width eats up the space. Add trolleys, shoes, waterproofs, and maybe an overnight bag if you’re doing a golf trip, and a saloon just doesn’t work.
We’ve probably 3,000 golf transfers over the years, mostly to Cheshire courses. Some airports run for golf trips to Scotland or Spain—occasional multi-course days where you’re hitting two different courses.
About 70% of golf bookings need estate cars minimum. MPV if it’s three or four golfers with equipment. You can try squeezing into a saloon if you’re solo with just clubs and nothing else, but honestly, most people book estates to avoid the faff.

Cheshire Golf Courses (Where People Actually Go)
Most golf transfers from Manchester head to premium Cheshire courses.
| Course | From Manchester | Journey Via | Green Fees (Rough Guide) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mere Golf & Country Club | 25-30 min | A556, Knutsford | £100-150 |
| Prestbury Golf Club | 20-25 min | A34, Wilmslow | £80-120 |
| Ringway Golf Club | 15-20 min | Near airport | £50-80 |
| Delamere Forest | 35-40 min | A556, Northwich | £40-60 |
Mere Golf & Country Club: Knutsford area. About 25-30 minutes from central Manchester via A56 and A556. Posh course. Corporate days. Decent clubhouse. Typical round takes 4-4.5 hours.
Prestbury: Just outside Wilmslow. 20-25 minutes from Manchester via A34. Popular for members’ guests. The course is hilly, so rounds often run 4.5 hours, especially if you’re walking.
Ringway: Literally next to Manchester Airport. You can watch planes landing while playing the back nine. About 15-20 minutes from the city centre. The easiest access to the premium courses.
Delamere Forest: Further out near Northwich. About 35-40 minutes. Beautiful forest course. Worth the drive, but adds journey time.
For longer golf trips like Birmingham to Manchester Airport before flying to St Andrews or somewhere, the equipment logistics get more complex because you’re adding suitcases to the clubs.
One Golfer vs Multiple Golfers (Vehicle Requirements)
Solo Golfer: One person, one golf bag, maybe shoes and waterproofs. An estate car usually works. Some saloons, if the bag isn’t enormous, and you angle it right. But estate’s safer bet.
Two Golfers: Two bags, two sets of shoes, waterproofs, trolleys maybe. The estate car handles this comfortably. Saloon definitely won’t work.
Three Golfers: MPV required. Three golf bags eat up serious space even without much other gear. The estate boot won’t fit three bags properly.
Four Golfers: MPV or, honestly, maybe a minibus, depending on equipment volume. Four bags plus four people plus everyone’s extra stuff gets tight in a standard MPV.
Most golf bookings are pairs. Two mates are having a round. Or corporate golf days where colleagues share transport. That’s the sweet spot for estate cars.
Wait and Return vs Drop-Off Only (How Golf Transfers Actually Work)
Drop-Off Only: We take you to the course. You play your round. You either have your own transport back, or you book a separate pickup later. Works if you’re spending the whole day there, hitting the clubhouse bar after, or you’ve got someone collecting you.
Wait and Return: Driver waits while you play. Typical round is 4-4.5 hours. The driver sits in the car park, grabs coffee, reads, whatever. When you finish, back in the car, home you go.
Waiting and returning costs more obviously because the driver is tied up for 5 hours instead of 30 minutes. But loads of people prefer it. No coordinating pickup timing. No wondering if the driver will be late. Just play your round knowing transport’s sorted.
Real Scenario: Two corporate clients doing a morning round at Mere. 9 am tee time. Booked wait and return. Round finished 1:15 pm (slow day, course was busy). Back in the car by 1:30 pm. Dropped off at their Manchester offices by 2 pm for afternoon meetings. Perfect.
If they’d booked separate trips, they’d be guessing finish time, potentially waiting at the clubhouse for pickup, or rushing the back nine to hit a pre-booked pickup window.
FAQ: Golf Course Transfer Service
Can a regular taxi fit golf clubs, or do I need an estate car?
Most golf bags won’t fit properly in a saloon taxi boots especially with other luggage or multiple bags. Estate car minimum for one golfer with clubs. Two golfers need an estate. Three or four golfers need an 5 seater MPV. A solo golfer with just clubs and nothing else might squeeze into a saloon if the bag isn’t massive, but an estate is a safer bet. We recommend the estate for all golf bookings to avoid boot space issues.
How much does a golf course transfer cost with waiting time?
Two-part pricing. Outbound journey charged at standard rate (e.g. Manchester to Mere is X). Waiting time during 4-5 hour round charged at the hourly waiting rate. Return journey at standard rate. The total cost is typically £80-120 for a full morning, including wait and return, depending on course location and waiting duration. Drop-off only, without waiting,, obviously costs just the outbound journey rate.
Do you wait during the golf round or come back later?
Both options are available. Wait, and return means the driver waits in the car park during your round (typically 4-4.5 hours), then drives you home after. Drop-off only means we take you there; you arrange your own return transport or book a separate pickup. Most golfers prefer wait and return for convenience despite the higher cost because it guarantees transport without coordinating timing.
Can you transfer multiple golfers with all their equipment?
Yeah, regularly do groups of 2-4 golfers. Two golfers fit comfortably in the estate with bags and gear. Three golfers need an MPV due to equipment volume. Four golfers need MPV minimum, possibly a minibus depending on total gear (bags, trolleys, shoes, waterproofs, etc). Golf bags take significant space, so vehicle size matters more than passenger count.
Do you do golf trips to Manchester Airport with clubs?
Yeah, that’s a common booking. Flying to Scotland, Spain, and Portugal for golf holidays. Need an estate or MPV because golf bag plus holiday suitcase plus hand luggage won’t fitin the saloon. We track the return flight automatically for pickup from the airport. Clubs might be muddy from links golf in Scotland. That’s fine, boots are washable. Same fixed rate as other airport transfers.
How early should I book a golf course transfer?
Minimum 24 hours’ notice, but 48-72 hours is better, especially for weekend rounds. Saturday morning golf transfers are in peak demand. Wait and return bookings tie up vehicles for 5-6 hours, so we need advance notice to allocate the driver properly. Last-minute golf bookings are difficult if it’s a busy weekend because estates and MPVs are already allocated to other golf jobs.
