Why You Must Mention Your Pet When Booking (The Driver Allergy Reality)
We’ve been doing pet-friendly transfers since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And here’s something most taxi companies won’t tell you. Not all our drivers are comfortable with pets. Some have allergies. Some just don’t want animals in their car.
This is why you absolutely must mention your pet when booking. We can’t have you showing up with a dog when the driver wasn’t expecting it. That’s unfair to the driver and puts everyone in an awkward situation.
When you call and say, “I need an airport transfer on Saturday at 5 am, and I’m bringing my cocker spaniel,” we assign a driver who’s happy with dogs. Problem solved. Everyone’s prepared.
We’ve probably done 1,500-2,000 pet transfers over the years. Dogs are going to kennels while their owners holiday. Cats are going to vet appointments. Families moving house with pets. People relocating with animals. Even a rabbit going to the airport once the owner was moving to France and taking a pet rabbit with them, which was unusual, but we managed it.

What Pets We Can Take (And What We Can’t)
Let’s be specific about what works and what doesn’t.
| Pet Type | Allowed? | Requirements | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Dogs (under 10kg) | Yes | Carrier recommended | Lap or foot space fine |
| Medium Dogs (10-25kg) | Yes | Must sit on the floor or a seat | Boot space if needed |
| Large Dogs (25kg+) | Case by case | Call to discuss | Depends on breed and vehicle |
| Cats | Yes | Must be in carrier | No exceptions on the carrier |
| Rabbits | Yes | Must be in carrier | Secure carrier needed |
| Caged Birds | Yes | Secure cage required | Cover the cage for the journey |
| Reptiles | Maybe | Call to discuss | Secure container needed |
| Farm Animals | No | Not suitable | Need specialist transport |
Dogs: Small dogs like terriers, pugs, and cocker spaniels are absolutely fine. Medium dogs like border collies and beagles work in most vehicles. Large dogs like labradors German Shepherds need MPV for space. Giant breeds like Great Danes might not fit comfortably even in an MPV.
Cats: Must be in a carrier. No negotiation on this. Cats get stressed in cars and can panic. A loose cat in a moving vehicle is dangerous for everyone. The carrier keeps the cat safe and contained.
Other Animals: Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and small birds are all fine if they’re in secure carriers or cages. Anything exotic or unusual, call us first.
For general service standards and vehicle types, see our Manchester airport taxi page covering fleet details.
Booking Timeline and Vehicle Assignment
Minimum 24 Hours Notice: We need time to assign a pet-friendly driver. Not all our drivers accept pets. Some have allergies to dogs or cats. Some just prefer not to have animals in their vehicle. That’s their choice, and we respect it.
Same-Day Pet Bookings: Very unlikely. By the time you’re calling, all drivers who accept pets might already be allocated to other jobs.
What We Need to Know:
- Pet type (dog, cat, rabbit, etc)
- Approximate size and weight
- Whether the pet is in a carrier
- If the pet has any behaviour issues
- If the pet sheds heavily or has allergies
Real Scenarios We’ve Handled
Scenario One: Family Moving to Spain Family of 4 plus cocker spaniel going to Manchester Airport for permanent move to Spain. The dog was flying as checked baggage (airline pet cargo). They had a dog carrier, all paperwork sorted. We took them in an MPV because 4 people plus luggage plus a dog carrier needed space. The dog was nervous but fine. £10 pet surcharge plus slight hair cleanup needed after. Straightforward.
Scenario Two: Cat to Emergency Vet. The woman’s cat needed an emergency vet appointment at a specialist clinic. The cat was in a carrier but very distressed (injured). The journey took 20 minutes. Cat crying the whole time, which upset the owner. We got them there safely. No mess. Stressful situation, but we helped.
Scenario Three: Large Dog That Didn’t Fit. The customer booked an airport transfer mentioning “medium dog.” We assigned saloon. The driver arrived to discover it was a 35kg Labrador. Didn’t fit comfortably in the saloon. We had to send an MPV instead. Caused 20 minute delay. This is why accurate pet size matters when booking.
Airport-Specific Pet Rules (What You Need Beyond Our Service)
We get you to the airport with your pet. But airports and airlines have their own rules.
Check-In: Most pets going on flights need to check in at a special desk or cargo area. Not standard passenger check-in. Research this before arrival.
Carrier Specifications: Airlines have specific carrier size and type requirements. Make sure your carrier meets airline rules, not just fits in our taxi.
Documentation: International pet travel needs vet certificates, pet passports, and import permits. That’s not our area, but you need it sorted before arriving at the airport.
Time Buffer: Pet check-in takes longer than passenger check-in. Add extra time. Standard 2 hours before the flight might not be enough with a pet.
FAQs:
Do you charge extra for pets in a taxi?
Yes, £10 pet surcharge per journey on top of the standard fare. Manchester city centre to the airport costs a normal fixed rate plus a £10 pet fee. Surcharge covers extra cleaning after pet transfer because hair, dander, and occasional accidents require thorough vehicle cleaning for the next passengers. If the pet makes a mess (vomit, toilet accident), an additional £50 cleaning fee is charged. Most pet transfers have no issues beyond the standard £10 surcharge.
Do cats need to be in carriers in a taxi?
Yes, cats must be in secure carriers. No exceptions. Loose cats in moving vehicles are dangerous because cats panic easily in unfamiliar situations and can interfere with the driver or escape when doors open. The carrier must be secure with proper latching. Cardboard boxes aren’t sufficient. Hard plastic or fabric carriers with secure doors are required. This is for the cat’s safety and everyone else’s safety.
Can large dogs travel in a regular taxi?
Depends on size. Small dogs (under 10kg) and medium dogs (10-25kg) fit in most vehicles. Large dogs (25kg+) need MPV for space. Giant breeds like Great Danes or Mastiffs might not fit comfortably even in an MPV. Tell us the dog breed and approximate weight when booking so we can assign the appropriate vehicle. A Labrador needs a different vehicle than a chihuahua. Accurate information prevents problems on pickup day.
How far in advance should I book a pet-friendly taxi?
Minimum 24 hours because not all drivers accept pets. Some drivers have allergies to dogs or cats. Some prefer not to have animals in their vehicle. We need time to assign a driver who’s comfortable with pets. 48 hours’ noticeis better, especially for weekends or early morning transfers. Same-day pet bookings are very unlikely because pet-friendly drivers might already be allocated to other jobs.
What happens if my dog sheds a lot or is muddy?
Standard £10 pet surcharge covers normal shedding and cleaning. If the dog is excessively muddy (like after a walk in rainy weather), bring a towel or blanket for the dog to sit on. This protects seats and makes cleanup easier. Heavy shedding breeds like huskies or golden retrievers are fine, but we vacuum thoroughly after. The main thing is mentioning the breed when booking, so the driver can prepare.
Can I bring a pet on an early morning airport transfer?
Yes, but need a minimum of 48 hours’ notice because early morning transfers (4 am-6 am) already need booking for driver availability, and adding a pet requirement makes it harder. Not all early morning drivers accept pets. Tell us when booking that you have a pet so we can assign an early morning driver who’s also pet-friendly. A typical scenario is a family travelling with a dog to the airport at 5 am for a flight. Doable but needs planning.
