Why You Can’t Just Flag Down a Private Hire Car
This catches a lot of people out on a Saturday night.
In Manchester, only hackney carriages, the black cabs, can be hailed in the street or picked up from a rank. Private hire cars like ours must be booked in advance. That’s the law, not a company policy.
The upside is real, though. When you book ahead, you get a fixed fare, your driver’s name and the car’s registration before it arrives. No meter ticking over while you sit in traffic on Great Ancoats Street.
One honest tip. If a car pulls up and offers you a ride without a booking, don’t get in. An unbooked private hire journey isn’t insured, and you have no record of who drove you.
Where We Pick Up in the Northern Quarter
The Northern Quarter is brilliant to walk around and awkward to drive through.
Thomas Street has been closed to cars since 2021. The council has also approved plans to close most of Stevenson Square to general traffic, keeping a short stretch for buses and black cabs only. Private hire cars can’t use it. Add the one way streets and loading bays, and a driver can lose ten minutes circling for somewhere legal to stop.
So we plan it with you. When you book, tell us the bar, restaurant, hotel or flat you’re at, and we’ll agree a pickup point on a nearby street that’s open to cars, such as Lever Street, Dale Street or Newton Street.
You walk a minute. The car is already waiting.
Late Nights and Early Starts
Friday and Saturday nights are when the Northern Quarter is busiest, and when finding a car on the spot is hardest. Here’s a booking we see all the time. Four friends finishing dinner off Oldham Street, heading home to Didsbury at 1am. They book at 9pm, agree a pickup on Lever Street, and ring us if they decide to stay for one more. The driver adjusts. The fare doesn’t.
Early starts work the same way. If you live in one of the Ancoats or Northern Quarter apartment blocks and have a 6am flight, a 4am pickup is booked the night before and confirmed by text.
Northern Quarter to Manchester Airport
This is our most booked route from the city centre. A taxi from the Northern Quarter to Manchester Airport usually takes 25 to 35 minutes via the Mancunian Way, Princess Parkway and the M56. We quote a fixed fare for your exact address, so roadworks or a slow M56 won’t change what you pay.
Flying home? For your Manchester Airport transfer back to the Northern Quarter, we track your flight live. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 with a name board, then walks you to the official pickup point in the T2 Multi Storey West car park, P3. You get 1 hour of free waiting from the moment you actually land.
Choosing the Right Car

| Executive | Up to 4 | Business travel and client meetings |
| MPV | Up to 7 | Groups heading out or families with luggage |
| 8 seater | Up to 8 | Birthday nights, stag and hen groups, office events |
Not sure? Tell us how many people and how many bags, and we’ll pick the car for you.
