What Actually Fits in an MPV (The Honest Breakdown)

Alright let’s get specific because this is where companies go vague on purpose.

Passengers: MPVs have 7 seats total (driver plus 6 passengers). But realistically? With luggage, you’re looking at 4-5 passengers comfortably. Six people fit if the luggage is super light. Like laptop bags and overnight stuff. But 6 people with full holiday suitcases? Not happening unless you’re very good at Tetris.

Luggage: Boot plus folded third row seats gives you space for 4 large suitcases. Plus, you can squeeze hand luggage and bags around people’s feet or on laps. Total realistic capacity is 4 big cases, 4-5 cabin bags or backpacks, and maybe some soft bags that squish.

When an MPV Makes Sense: Family of 4 with 4 suitcases heading to Manchester Airport for 2 weeks in Spain. Perfect fit.

Five mates going to a Leeds stag do with overnight bags and a few beers. Easy.

Couple with golf clubs, ski equipment, and normal luggage. You need the extra space even with just 2 people.

Three generations going to a family wedding. Grandparents, parents, 2 kids. That’s 6 people but luggage is light because it’s just UK travel for a weekend. Works.

When an MPV Doesn’t Work: Family of 6 with 6 large suitcases going on a 3-week holiday. The math doesn’t add up. You’d need an 8-seater or honestly maybe 2 vehicles.

Four adults each with a large suitcase plus ski gear. That’s 4 cases plus 4 sets of skis. Too much for one MPV. Need something bigger or split into 2 vehicles.

MPV vs Saloon vs 8-Seater (What You Actually Need)

Most people default to saloon without thinking. Sometimes that’s smart. Sometimes they’re going to regret it when their bags don’t fit.

How to decide:

If it’s 1-3 passengers with normal bags (2 suitcases or less), saloon’s your answer. Don’t overpay for space.

If it’s 4 passengers OR you’ve got 3+ large suitcases, MPV becomes necessary. Simple as that.

If it’s 6+ passengers with proper luggage, or 7-8 passengers even with light bags, you need the 8-seater. MPV won’t cut it.

We’re pretty specific about this stuff.

Models: Ford Galaxy. Seven seats. Massive boot when third row is folded. Diesel. Good on motorways.

VW Touran. Smaller than Galaxy but still proper 7-seater. Petrol or diesel. Reliable as anything.

Seat Alhambra. Basically a rebadged VW Touran. Same size, same engine options. Just different badge.

Age: Maximum 4 years old. Average across the MPV fleet is 2.1 years. Standard replacement at 3-4 years depending on mileage and condition.

Maintenance: Service every 12,000 miles or annually. Safety checks every 6 months. Interior deep clean weekly. Outside wash twice a week minimum.

Why MPVs Cost More: They’re bigger. Use more fuel. Cost more to maintain. Insurance is higher. So yeah, they cost more to book than a saloon. Usually about 20% more. But if you need the space, you need the space.

Common MPV Bookings (What People Actually Use Them For)

Out of those 17,000 MPV bookings we do yearly, here’s what they look like.

Family Holidays (40%): Family of 4-5 heading to Manchester Airport with full luggage. Typical booking is 4 people, 4 large suitcases, hand luggage, maybe a buggy or car seats. MPV handles it no problem.

Yeah loads of them. MPVs work great for families with multiple kids needing different car seat types. You can fit 2-3 child seats across the middle row usually. Infant carrier, forward-facing seat, booster. All at once. Give us at least 24 hours notice so we can have the right seats ready. 48 hours is better.

How old are the MPV vehicles in your fleet?

The average is 2.1 years old. The maximum age is 4 years. We run 3-4 year replacement cycles. When MPVs hit 3-4 years they’re out and replaced with new ones. This keeps interiors looking good, features modern, and everything is working properly. Older MPVs run fine mechanically but show wear faster than saloons because families with kids use them.

Are MPVs available 24/7 for airport transfers?

Yeah 24/7 including weekends and bank holidays. Common pattern is early morning airport runs (4am-6am pickups) for families with early flights. Same fixed pricing no matter what time. No night surcharges. MPV availability is usually fine except peak holiday periods (school holidays, Christmas, Easter) when demand is highest. Book ahead during those times.
