What We Are (And What We’re Not)

We’ve been doing hospital transfers since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And I need to be completely clear from the start about what this service actually is.

We’re a private taxi company. We take you to medical appointments and collect you afterwards. We’re not NHS Patient Transport Service. We’re not an ambulance. We’re not medically trained carers. We’re taxi drivers who understand that getting to hospital appointments matters, and we try to make it as stress-free as possible.

If you need NHS Patient Transport, that’s arranged through your hospital or GP surgery for people who are medically unable to travel by other means. That’s free. We’re private taxis that you pay for. Different thing entirely.

We’ve probably done 800-1000 hospital transfers over the years. Elderly patients are going to consultations. People needing regular dialysis or chemotherapy who can’t drive themselves. Family members who need transport to visit relatives in the hospital. Post-surgery patients are going for follow-up appointments.

Most of our hospital work is routine outpatient appointments. Not emergencies. Not critical care. Just people who need reliable transport to get to their appointment on time and get home safely afterwards.

Common Manchester Hospital Routes We Cover

Let me give you specific hospitals and journey times from different Manchester areas.

Hospital From Manchester Centre From South Manchester From Salford Parking/Drop-off Notes
Manchester Royal Infirmary 10-15 min 20-30 min 15-20 min Main entrance Oxford Road, one-way system
Christie Hospital 15-20 min 10-15 min 25-30 min Wilmslow Road entrance, usually flowing
Wythenshawe Hospital 30-35 min 15-20 min 40-45 min Southmoor Road, multiple entrances
Salford Royal 15-20 min 30-35 min 5-10 min Stott Lane is usually accessible
North Manchester General 20-25 min 35-40 min 20-25 min Delaunays Road, straightforward

Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI): City centre location on Oxford Road. The main entrance gets busy. A one-way system can be confusing for drop-offs. We know which entrance to use for different departments. Tell us which clinic or department you’re attending when booking.

Christie Hospital: Withington area, Wilmslow Road. Specialist cancer hospital. We do lots of Christie runs for chemotherapy and radiotherapy appointments. Patients often feel rough after treatment, so we take extra care with smooth driving and patient comfort.

Wythenshawe Hospital: South Manchester, a big hospital with multiple departments spread across the site. Important to know which entrance you need. Appointments can run very late here.

For general affordable taxi rates across Manchester, hospital trips use the same distance-based pricing as other journeys.

What Drivers Can Help With (And What We Can’t Do)

This causes confusion so let me be crystal clear.

What Drivers Will Do:

  • Help you into and out of the vehicle
  • Carry your bags or belongings
  • Store walking sticks, walkers, or crutches
  • Wait while you fold the wheelchair (if you can fold it yourself)
  • Drop you off at the hospital entrance closest to your department
  • Wait for your appointment to finish (hourly rate)
  • Drive carefully for passengers feeling unwell

What Drivers Won’t Do:

  • Provide personal care or medical assistance
  • Physically lift or transfer you from a wheelchair to a car seat
  • Operate medical equipment
  • Make medical decisions
  • Accompany you into hospital or an appointment
  • Administer medication

If you need physical transfer assistance from a wheelchair to a car, you need to travel with a family member or carer who can do that. If you need medical support during the journey, you need NHS Patient Transport or an ambulance, not a private taxi.

This isn’t us being unhelpful. It’s about safety and training. We’re taxi drivers, not healthcare assistants. We’ll do everything within our ability and training, but we can’t provide medical care.

FAQs:

How much does a hospital transfer cost?

Standard distance-based rates apply. Manchester city centre to Manchester Royal Infirmary is typically £10-15. South Manchester to Christie Hospital is £8-12. Wythenshawe to Salford Royal is £25-30. These are one-way rates. If the driver waits during the appointment, add £30-40 per hour waiting. Return journey same price as the outward. Total for a round trip with a 30-minute wait might be £35-50, depending on distance and actual waiting time.

Do you provide wheelchair accessible vehicles?

We have 2 wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV), but they need 48 hours’ booking due to the limited fleet. Most hospital transfers use standard vehicles because many patients can transfer from a wheelchair to a car seat independently or with a family member’s help. If you stay in a wheelchair during the journey, specifically request a WAV when booking, and we’ll check availability. Cannot guarantee same-day WAV bookings.

Can the driver wait while I’m at an appointment?

Yes, the driver can wait, but it’s charged hourly (£30-40 per hour typically). For short appointments (blood tests, quick consultations under 30 minutes), waiting makes sense. For longer appointments (consultant meetings, treatments, multiple tests taking 2+ hours), often cheaper to book a separate return journey when you’re actually ready rather than paying the driver to wait. Your choice is based on appointment type and budget.

What if my appointment runs really late?

Text the driver as soon as you know the appointment is delayed. The driver adjusts the pickup time, and you’re charged for additional waiting beyond the originally booked time (usually £15-20 per 30 minutes). If the delay is extreme (2+ hours) and the driver has another booking, we might need to send a different driver for your delayed pickup. Communication is key – text driver with updates rather than going silent.

Do you help people who feel unwell after treatment?

Drivers will drive carefully and smoothly for passengers feeling unwell after chemotherapy, dialysis, or other treatments. We can stop if you need fresh air or feel sick. But drivers aren’t medically trained and can’t provide healthcare. If you’re likely to feel very unwell, travel with a family member or friend who can assist. We’ll do our best to make the journey comfortable, but we’re taxi drivers, not medical staff.

Can a family member travel with the patient?

Yes absolutely. Most medical appointment bookings include a companion travelling with the patient. Elderly parent plus adult child. Patient plus spouse. No extra charge for additional passenger unless vehicle capacity requires a larger vehicle. Tell us when booking if a companion is travelling so we can ensure adequate vehicle size. Often reassuring for patients to have a family member along, especially after procedures or bad news.

Regular Appointment Schedules (Weekly Dialysis, Chemotherapy)

Some patients need regular hospital trips. Three times weekly dialysis. Weekly chemotherapy. Fortnightly physiotherapy.

How Regular Bookings Work: We can set up standing bookings. Same time, same day each week. Monday-Wednesday-Friday 8 am pickup for dialysis. Every Tuesday, 10 am pickup for chemo. The driver assigned knows your routine.

Benefits of Regular Schedule: Same driver usually (they learn your needs). Priority booking (slot held for you). Consistent pricing. Less admin (you’re not rebooking every time).

The Reality: Hospitals sometimes reschedule appointments. Treatment times vary. Your health varies week to week. Regular booking gives structure but still needs flexibility. If Tuesday’s chemo is moved to Wednesday, just call us to adjust that week.

For corporate regular booking arrangements, we use similar standing booking systems for business clients.

The Waiting Time Reality

Hospital appointments rarely finish on time. Consultant running late, tests taking longer than expected, extra examination needed. This happens constantly.

How Waiting Works: You book a pickup for 2 pm after your 1 pm appointment. Appointment overruns. You text the driver at 2 pm saying, “consultant’s running 30 minutes late, pickup now 2:30 pm please.” Driver adjusts. You’re charged for the 30-minute wait.

Waiting Rates: Usually £15-20 per 30 minutes. An hour’s wait is £30-40. If your appointment genuinely overruns by 90 minutes, you’re paying £45-60 extra waiting time.

When to Use Return Booking vs Wait: Short appointment (blood test, X-ray, quick consultation): Book return pickup for a specific time. If it overruns slightly, small waiting charge.

Long appointment (consultant meeting, multiple tests, treatment): Might be better getting a taxi there, then calling for a separate taxi home when you’re actually done, rather than paying the driver to wait 2-3 hours.

Real Scenario: Elderly patient going to MRI for a consultant appointment scheduled 11 am-11:30 am. Booked pickup for 12 pm. The consultant ran 45 minutes late. Patient texted at 11:50 am saying “still waiting, probably 12:30 pm now.” The driver adjusted, the patient was charged an extra £20 for an additional 30 minutes. Total journey cost went from £25 to £45. Not ideal, but the patient got home safely without stress.
