Why Luggage Capacity Matters More Than You Think
We’ve been doing luggage-heavy transfers since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And here’s what catches people out every single time. They massively underestimate how much space luggage actually takes.
“I’ve got 4 suitcases” sounds manageable. But 4 large suitcases are approximately 120cm x 80cm x 30cm each. That’s serious volume. Standard saloon boot is about 450-500 litres. Four large cases need 600-700 litres minimum.
The maths doesn’t work. The cases won’t fit. People book a saloon, the driver arrives, the luggage doesn’t fit, everyone’s standing on the pavement trying to rearrange cases, hoping physics will suddenly change. It doesn’t.
We’ve probably done 8,000-10,000 airport transfers over the years. About 30% involve what we’d call “excess luggage” – more than the standard 2 cases per person. Families are going on 2-week holidays. People are moving house. Students are going to university with an entire term’s worth of stuff.

Standard Luggage vs Excess Luggage (What Actually Fits Where)
Let’s be specific about vehicle capacities.
| Vehicle Type | Boot Capacity | Realistic Luggage | Passenger Space | When to Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 450-500 litres | 2 large cases + 2 cabin bags | 1-3 passengers | Solo/couple, normal luggage |
| Estate | 650-700 litres | 4-5 large cases + extras | 1-3 passengers | Extra luggage, equipment |
| MPV | 800-900 litres | 6+ large cases OR 4 cases + equipment | 4-6 passengers | Families, groups, heavy luggage |
Standard Luggage: 2 large suitcases plus cabin bags per couple. Fits in a saloon comfortably. Most people travel with this.
Excess Luggage: 3+ large suitcases per person. OR equipment like skis, golf clubs, musical instruments. OR moving house boxes. Needs estate or MPV.
The £10 Surcharge: We charge £10 extra for excess luggage (4+ large cases). Why? Takes longer to load. Requires a bigger vehicle. More fuel consumption. The driver helps with heavy lifting. The £10 covers this.

Ski Equipment (Why It’s More Complicated Than Regular Luggage)
Ski equipment is the classic excess luggage scenario. You’ve got a ski bag (180-200cm long), a boot bag, a regular suitcase, and a cabin bag. For 2 people, that’s 4 long bags plus 4 regular bags.
Standard Saloon: Ski bags won’t fit. They’re too long for the boot even diagonally. Some people try putting them through the rear seats, but that blocks passenger space and isn’t safe.
Estate Car: Perfect for ski equipment. Boot depth handles 200cm ski bags easily. We can fit 2 ski bags, 2 boot bags, 2 suitcases, and cabin bags. Comfortable for 2 passengers going skiing.
MPV: Needed if it’s 3-4 people with ski equipment. Four ski bags plus luggage need the extra space. Rear seats fold to create a massive cargo area.
Booking Timeline: Minimum 24 hours’ notice for ski transfers. We need to assign an estate or MPV. Can’t send a saloon when you’ve got 200cm ski bags.
Moving House or Long-Term Travel (The Really Heavy Luggage)
Some passengers aren’t just going on holiday. They’re relocating. Moving countries. Going to university for a full term.
University Student Scenario: Heading to Manchester for the September start. Got 3 large suitcases, a duvet bag, boxes of books, a laptop bag, and a toiletries box. That’s way more than holiday luggage.
Saloon won’t handle it. Estate probably won’t either. MPV needed. Sometimes people need 2 vehicles if they’re bringing furniture or tons of boxes.
Long-Haul Relocation: Moving to Australia. The airline allows 2 checked bags, but you’ve got 4 large cases total. Two are excess baggage costing you £80 each with the airline. Plus, you need a taxi that fits all 4 cases.
We can fit the luggage (MPV handles it). But you’re paying £160 in airline excess baggage fees, plus our transfer fee, plus £10 luggage surcharge. Sometimes posting boxes ahead is actually cheaper. Just being honest.
Airline Excess Baggage vs Taxi Surcharge (The Cost Reality)
Here’s something worth thinking about.
Typical Airline Excess Baggage Fees: £60-100 per extra bag on European flights, £80-150 per extra bag on long-haul flights
Our £10 Luggage Surcharge: Covers vehicle upgrade and handling for 4-6 cases total
The Maths: If you’re taking 4 large cases to save packing space, you’re paying the airline maybe £120-200 in excess fees plus our £10. Total £130-210 extra.
Alternatively, pack smarter and fit into 2 cases. Zero airline fees. No taxi surcharge. Save £130-210.
Not telling you what to do with your money. Just pointing out the total cost reality. Some people prefer taking extra luggage for convenience. Fair enough. Just be aware of the full cost.
FAQ: Luggage Transfer Service
How much does an excess luggage taxi cost?
Standard transfer rate plus £10 excess luggage surcharge for 4+ large cases. Manchester city centre to the airport in an MPV costs the normal MPV rate plus a £10 luggage fee. Surcharge covers larger vehicle requirements, extra loading time, and driver assistance with heavy bags. If you have 2-3 standard cases, no surcharge applies. Estate car bookings might need a surcharge depending on the total luggage volume.
What’s the maximum luggage you can fit in one vehicle?
MPV fits 6-8 large suitcases maximum if minimal passengers are travelling. More passengers mean less luggage space because seats take up room. Estate fits 4-5 large cases. Saloon fits 2 large cases plus cabin bags. These are realistic capacities, not theoretical maximums. Trying to squeeze more usually doesn’t work and delays pickup while repacking on pavement.
Can you transport ski equipment or golf clubs?
Yes, but need an estate car or MPV. Ski bags are 180-200cm long and won’t fit in salon boots. Golf clubs fit in the state diagonally. Two sets of ski equipment or golf clubs need a minimum estate. Four sets need MPV. Tell us when booking that you have ski/golf equipment, so we can send the appropriate vehicle. Minimum 24 hours’ notice needed for estate/MPV assignment.
Do you charge per bag or per journey for excess luggage?
Per journey. £10 excess luggage surcharge applies to the whole journey if you have 4+ large cases total, not £10 per bag. A family of 4 with 5 large suitcases pays a £10 surcharge. Solo traveller with 6 cases also pays a £10 surcharge. Surcharge is about vehicle capacity and handling, not counting individual bags.
How far ahead should I book for heavy luggage transfer?
Minimum 24 hours for estate or MPV with excess luggage or equipment. We need time to assign an appropriate vehicle. Same-day bookings often get salon because that’s what’s available. Then your 5 suitcases don’t fit, and everyone’s stuck. Weekend transfers with heavy luggage need 48 hours because estate/MPV availability is tighter on busy days.
What if luggage doesn’t fit in the booked vehicle?
If you accurately described luggage when booking and we sent the wrong vehicle, we upgrade at no extra cost (might mean a delay waiting for a larger vehicle). If you said “3 bags” but actually have 6 large cases, that’s a different story. We charge for a vehicle upgrade, and you might wait 20-40 minutes for an MPV to arrive. This is why accurate luggage information when booking really matters.
