Long Distance Taxi Service at a Glance

Our long distance taxi service takes you from Manchester to London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle, and other major UK cities. We also offer long distance airport transfers to Heathrow and Gatwick. Each trip is direct and door to door. Every fare is fixed when you book, so traffic, roadworks and delays never change the price. Licensed drivers carry out every journey under Wolverhampton Council operator licence PHOP445, in a saloon, MPV or minibus matched to your group size and luggage. A long distance taxi makes the most sense for groups of three or more, families with heavy luggage, early morning or late night travel, and airport runs where train times do not work. We need 24 to 48 hours’ notice for long distance bookings, and we will always tell you honestly if the train is the better option.

Common Long Distance Routes (With Honest Pricing)

Let me give you specific routes and costs so you can actually work out if this makes sense for your situation.

Route Distance Journey Time Cost Range Train Alternative When Taxi Works
Manchester to London 200 miles 3.5 to 4.5 hours £300 to £350 £60 to £100 Groups of 4+, heavy luggage
Manchester to Birmingham 85 miles 1.5 to 2 hours £120 to £150 £30 to £60 Groups, specific timing
Manchester to Newcastle 140 miles 2.5 to 3 hours £220 to £260 £30 to £60 Groups, luggage
Manchester to Leeds 45 miles 1 to 1.5 hours £80 to £100 £15 to £30 Groups, multiple stops
Manchester to Bristol 180 miles 3 to 3.5 hours £280 to £320 £50 to £80 Groups, timing

Manchester to London (200 miles): M6 south, M1, into London. Takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic (and there’s always London traffic). Costs £300 to £350. Family of five splits that to £60 to £70 each, which is similar to train pricing, but you go door to door with all your luggage. Solo traveller? Get the train. It’s £60 to £100 and takes a similar time.

Manchester to Birmingham (85 miles): M6 southbound. Takes 1.5 to 2 hours normally (add extra if there are roadworks, which there usually are on the M6). Costs £120 to £150. The train is £30 to £60. Only makes sense if you’re a group of three or more, or you’ve got timing requirements where trains don’t work.

For really epic journeys beyond 300 miles, check our cross country service page, which explains when those massive distances work and when they’re just bonkers.

Popular Long Distance Routes From Manchester

Fixed fares for our most requested city and airport routes. Each route has its own page with pickup details, vehicle options and journey information.

Route Distance Journey Time Fixed Fare
Manchester to London About 200 miles 3.5 to 4.5 hours £300 to £350
Manchester to Edinburgh About 224 miles Around 4 hours £[CONFIRM] to £[CONFIRM]
Manchester to Heathrow Airport About 200 miles 3.5 to 4.5 hours £300 to £350
Manchester to Gatwick Airport About 227 miles Around 3 hours 45 minutes £[CONFIRM] to £[CONFIRM]

Fares are fixed when you book and include the driver’s return journey. Groups of four or more often pay less per person than the train.

When Long Distance Actually Makes Sense

Right, so when do people genuinely book these expensive journeys instead of getting the train?

Groups of 4 to 6 People: A family going from Manchester to London for a wedding. Five people. Train tickets are £70 to £100 each (total £350 to £500). Taxi is £300 to £350 total. Split five ways, that’s £60 to £70 each. Similar money, but everyone travels together, direct to the wedding venue, with unlimited luggage for dresses and suits. Makes perfect sense.

Heavy Luggage Situations: Family moving house. Student going to university with the entire term’s worth of belongings. People relocating with way more stuff than trains can handle. Check our minibus options if you need serious luggage capacity for 6 to 8 large cases plus equipment.

Impossible Timing: Need to be in Birmingham for an 8 am meeting. Last night’s train doesn’t get you there early enough with buffer time. Morning trains are too late. A 5 am taxi departure gets you there at 7 am with time to spare. Expensive but solves an unsolvable timing problem.

Multiple Stop Requirements: Collecting colleagues from three different Manchester suburbs, all going to the Birmingham conference together. Coordinating everyone onto the same train is a nightmare. One taxi picks everyone up and arrives together. Works.

Late Night or Early Morning: Arriving in London 11 pm, need to get to Manchester. Last train’s gone. The first train is at 6 am the next morning. Taxi gets you home tonight instead of paying for a London hotel plus a morning train. Sometimes works out to similar money.

FAQs

How much does a long distance taxi cost?

Expect £150 to £450 for typical 100 to 300 mile journeys. Manchester to Birmingham (85 miles) costs £120 to £150. Manchester to London (200 miles) costs £300 to £350. These are fixed rates based on distance and driver time, including the driver’s return journey. For groups of 4 to 6 splitting cost, it often works out similarly to train fares but with door to door convenience. For solo travellers, the train is usually dramatically cheaper unless you have specific timing or luggage requirements.

Is a long distance taxi cheaper than a train?

Usually, no for solo travellers. The Manchester to London train is £60 to £100 versus a £300 to £350 taxi. For groups of 4 to 5 people, the maths changes. Five train tickets at £70 each are £350 total. Taxi is £300 to £350 split five ways (£60 to £70 each). Similar money, but the taxi goes door to door with unlimited luggage. A solo business traveller should get the train. The family of five going to a wedding should consider the taxi.

How long does a long distance journey take?

Manchester to London takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours via the M6 and M1. Manchester to Birmingham takes 1.5 to 2 hours via the M6 (add time for roadworks). Manchester to Newcastle takes 2.5 to 3 hours via the M6 and A1. These times include motorway driving but account for traffic, service breaks if needed, and city navigation at the destination. Always add a 30 to 60 minute buffer versus Google Maps estimates for realistic timing.

Can you do same day long distance bookings?

Need a minimum of 24 to 48 hours’ notice for long distance transfers. These journeys tie up the vehicle and driver for 4 to 8 hours total, including the return journey. Calling the morning of and expecting an afternoon departure isn’t realistic. Driver allocation, route planning, and ensuring we have capacity all require advance notice. Emergency same day is only possible in exceptional circumstances with available drivers.

Do you cover Manchester to London regularly?

Yes, Manchester to London is one of our most common long distance routes. We do this journey maybe 40 to 50 times per year. Usually for groups, families with luggage, or business teams that need specific timing. The route goes M6 south, then M1 into London. Takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on London traffic (there’s always traffic). Cost is £300 to £350 fixed rate. Groups of 4+ find this cost effective when splitting.

What size vehicle is suitable for long distance travel with luggage?

Standard saloon fits 3 passengers plus 2 to 3 large suitcases. For 4 to 5 passengers with luggage, we need an MPV or an estate. For 6+ passengers or massive luggage amounts, we need an 8 seater MPV or a minibus. Tell us the passenger count and approximate luggage when booking so we can assign the appropriate vehicle. Trying to fit 4 people with 5 large cases in a standard saloon doesn’t work and causes problems on pickup day.

Are tolls and London charges included in the fare?

[CONFIRM: say whether the M6 Toll, London Congestion Charge, ULEZ and airport drop off charges are included in the fixed fare or added at cost.]

We often tend not to rebook or book ahead when it comes to airport taxi’s but recent experiences meant we decided to do just that. RidexTaxis were brilliant. Confirmation, and agreed costs (which were significantly better than previous experiences varying from £40-75). Our driver kept an eye on our inbound flight, text to let us know where to meet, and was the first taxi as we arrived. Brilliant service all round. We won’t use anyone else. Not uber, not a black cab. Pre book and see for yourselves.

Adeel Ahmed got in contact with me as soon as the plane had landed in Manchester to state that he was there waiting. This reassured me. I was expecting someone to be holding my name on a piece of paper as I came through arrivals. After another phonecall we found each other. Adeel Ahmed.was very polite and took my bag as I had broken my arm. His vehicle was just what I needed and was adapted for disabilities like a person tripping over a wall on holiday. The trip back to Mid Wales was very comfortable and he also made sure I was strapped in as I couldn't do this myself. Top Marks, Top Driver, very comfortable car, attentive and a good driver.

Our car ride experience was excellent. We had originally booked the pickup for 2 hours later, but the driver contacted us as soon as our airplane landed and kindly offered to pick us up earlier. This was extremely helpful and saved us a lot of waiting time. The car was very clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. The driver was friendly, professional, and made the entire ride smooth and easy. The price was also very reasonable for the quality of service we received. Highly recommended — great service, very helpful, and great value.

Long Distance Taxi Service UK

What We Won't Do

Beyond 300 Miles: Manchester to Cornwall is 310 miles. That’s 6 hours of driving. We’ll quote it, but we’ll also tell you honestly that it rarely makes sense. That’s proper cross country territory where economics become completely mad.

Multiple City Tours: “Can you take us from Manchester to Birmingham to Oxford to London?” That’s not a taxi journey. That’s a multi day touring itinerary. You need a coach operator or a chauffeur firm for multi day bookings.

Same Day Long Distance: Calling at 10 am wanting to be in London by 2 pm. That’s 200 miles away. Even if we had an available driver (we won’t), that’s cutting it ridiculously tight. Need 24 to 48 hours’ minimum notice for proper long distance work.

Waiting Times: “Can the driver wait in London for 4 hours, then bring us back?” You’re paying for 8 hours of driver time there and back plus 4 hours waiting. That’s £500 to £600. Book two separate one way journeys instead.

For normal Manchester area work and affordable local pricing, we’re way more cost effective than these epic long distance runs.

What We Actually Mean By Long Distance

We’ve been doing long distance transfers since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And I need to be straight with you right from the start about what “long distance” actually means and when it makes sense.

For us, long distance is anything over 100 miles. That covers Manchester to Newcastle (140 miles) and Manchester to London (200 miles). Proper intercity journeys that take 2 to 6 hours.

Most people calling about long distance taxis shouldn’t book them. That sounds mad coming from someone running a taxi business, but it’s true. Manchester to London costs £300 to £350. The train is £60 to £100. Unless you’re a group of four or five people splitting the cost, or you’ve got massive amounts of luggage, or the timing is completely impossible with trains, you’re wasting money.

But sometimes those specific circumstances exist. Sometimes a taxi genuinely is the only solution that works. Sometimes splitting £350 between five people (that’s £70 each) makes perfect sense compared to five separate train tickets plus the hassle of coordinating everyone.

We’ve done maybe 200 to 250 long distance transfers over the years. Not thousands. A couple of hundred. Because these journeys only make sense for specific situations, and most people (quite rightly) choose cheaper alternatives.
