When it comes to luggage, most taxi companies will throw a number at you. Or rather “depends on what the car is.” That doesn’t do you much good if you’re packing for a two-week vacation or have a family of five.
We’ve been operating airport transfers Manchester-side since 2017, and in that time we have completed thousands of journeys — from the single business traveller with a laptop bag to families with double prams, golf bags and ski gear. Here is what actually fits, car to car.
Ring +44 161 507 6677, check your bags and then book — it takes just 60 seconds but will save a load of hassle on the day.
Luggage Capacity by Type of Vehicle
This is where the vast majority of taxi sites fail. They will just display their little suitcase icon and leave it at that. We’ll give you actual numbers.
| Vehicle Type | Passengers | Large Cases | Cabin Bags | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon (e.g. Toyota Prius) | Up to 4 | 2 | 2 | Solo or couple, same day trips |
| Executive (e.g. Mercedes E-Class) | Up to 4 | 2-3 | 2 | Business traveller |
| MPV (e.g. Ford Galaxy) | Up to 6 | 4-5 | 3-4 | Groups |
| Minibus (8-seater) | Up to 8 | 6-8 | 6 | Heavier luggage, large party |
Here, by “large case”, we mean a standard 23kg checked bag — the one that most airlines permit. And if your bags are large, or you’re not sure, just let us know when you book. We’d rather know in advance than try and piecemeal it on your front doorstep.
Saloon Taxis: Fit for Light Travellers
A medium-size saloon can have a usable boot space of approximately 400-500 litres. That leaves enough room for two big suitcases, maybe three if they’re not completely loaded. Cabin bags nearly always fit in the footwell or on a lap — there is space.
But here’s the part that anyone who’s not a listmaker doesn’t think about: when you come back after vacation, you often have more than before you left. Souvenirs, an additional bag, holiday shopping. If you are booking a return trip, it’s worth going up one car size just to be sure.
Large and Bulky Items: Golf Bags, Pushchairs, Wheelchairs, Ski Equipment
This is where things get interesting — and where most rivals are almost entirely mum. We’ve had lots of questions about oversized items, so let’s go over them properly.
Golf Bags
Golf bags fit in an MPV or estate-type vehicle without issue. In a regular saloon? It depends on the bag. Some collapsible bags can do it; most hard-sided travel bags can’t. If you’re arriving at Manchester Airport with golf clubs, book an MPV just to be sure.
Pushchairs and Prams
Strollers and pushchairs come in all shapes and sizes, depending on the brand. A small folding buggy fits in most saloon cars. You need an MPV if you’ve got a full travel system or double buggy. If you’re not sure, tell us the make and model when you book — we can tell you immediately.
Wheelchairs
Passengers using a standard folding wheelchair will be most comfortable with an MPV or minibus. We do not have adapted vehicles available, however we are able to provide boot dimensions if you need to check compatibility before booking.
Ski and Snowboard Bags
Ski and snowboard bags are long and unwieldy. These nearly always require an MPV or 8-seater, even for one person. We’ve made quite a few ski airport runs to know that a saloon is rarely the right choice here.
FAQ: Airport Taxi Luggage Questions
How much baggage can I take in a regular taxi?
A saloon taxi should fit up to two large suitcases (23kg max each) and two carry-ons. If you need a bit more room, simply book an MPV. Be sure to inform us that you will also be carrying luggage when booking so we can assign the right vehicle from the outset.
Can I take my pram or pushchair in an airport taxi?
It depends on the pram. Most compact, collapsible buggies will fit in a saloon boot. You will need an MPV for bigger travel systems or double buggies. If you provide us with the make and model when booking we can verify the appropriate vehicle for you.
Do I have to pay extra for oversized luggage?
No. RidexTaxis do not charge extra for oversized luggage at the time of booking. The vehicle we send will match what you’re bringing. We don’t believe in hidden baggage fees.
Am I allowed to travel with golf clubs or ski equipment in a taxi to Manchester Airport?
Sure, though you’ll need an MPV or 8-seater for bulky sports kit. A saloon boot couldn’t accommodate solid golf travel bags or ski bags. Book the right car from the start and there is no problem.
What if my bags don’t fit in the taxi when it arrives?
Our drivers will let us know right away. We’ll either dispatch a second vehicle, or upgrade — with no extra charge to you if the mismatch is the result of an error in our booking system. It doesn’t often occur, because we ask about luggage upfront on every booking call.
Can I pay for my airport taxi by card?
Yes. RidexTaxis accepts cash, debit card and credit card. You can also pay online if you are booking through our website. Card payments don’t carry an additional surcharge.

If you’re travelling with children, a pram and all the usual trappings of a family holiday, book an MPV or 8-seater from the outset. We’ve answered so many calls from customers that have booked a saloon and then given us a bell sat on their driveway at 4am, asking why they can’t get the boot to shut.
