Why Use RidexTaxis for Accessible Airport Transfers
Since we started operating under license PHOP445 at Manchester, we have been providing airport transfers with wheelchair facilities. This is the difference between us – our drivers do not simply have a ramp in their boot.
All of our available vehicles are compliant with the current WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) regulations. What that means is ramps rated to 300kg capacity, non-slip surfaces and correctly certified anchor points. Not the wobbly aftermarket ramps some companies weave in a standard vehicle.
The training that our drivers receive is completed in disability awareness through the BTEC Level 2 Award or Certificate in Understanding Disability. Sounds formal, but this translates to their knowing how to cinch down a wheelchair properly. They have learned that helping someone use a manual chair is different from helping someone operate a powered mobility scooter.
In 2024, we undertook more than 2,800 accessible airport transfers. You pick up things when doing this day in and day out — like the Manchester Airport terminals with the most wheelchair-user-friendly drop-off zones (Terminal 2 wins, by the way).
Manchester Airport Routes: What Our Drivers Want You To Know
The A538 from central Manchester in normal traffic is a 15-25 minute journey. But there’s a catch — accessible transfers require special planning.
Traditional taxis can navigate side streets during M56 gridlock. Our WAV vehicles require specific roads. We steer clear of roads where speed bumps will jostle wheelchairs, despite Google Maps recommendations. Mobility-friendly vehicles actually work better on the A5103 Princess Road due to more even road.
Peak times hit differently too. Early flights (5am-8am) will give you fewer traffic woes, but assisting your loved one in the dark. Our vehicles have interior LED lighting that illuminates the ramp area — not something you think much about until you’re trying to board at 4:30am in December!
What It’s Like to Use Wheelchair Accessible Taxis
Most don’t get into this part. You call and they say “yes we do wheelchairs,” but then it’s chaos when you show up to pick up … because no one asked the right questions.
When you make a booking with us, we ask certain questions:
- Manual or powered wheelchair?
- Approximate weight (chairs range from 15kg to 150kg)
- Are you able to transfer out of the chair into a car seat?
- Collapsible mobility scooter, or full-size?
This isn’t nosiness. In the boot, a Saloon could manage to take a fold-down scooter. We can cater for a standard WAV with tail-lift ramp, for a manual folding ramp and finally our full WAV with powered ramp. We have both — but not if we don’t know what you need.
The ramp takes about 45 seconds to deploy. Driver straps the wheelchair up with four-point harness anchors (must under Equality Act 2010). The entire process of boarding: 3-4 with an experienced driver.
Terminal-Specific Pickup Procedures Nobody Explains
Manchester Airport accessible pick ups in T1, T2 and T3 Manchester Airport Forbidden pick-up policy for all 3 terminals of the airport Note : Pickup points in Terminal 1, T2) are supposedly now being managed.
Terminal 1
Drop off at Door 2 (ground level). Dropoff at the exact same spot — no escalator, no stairs separating you from the car.
Terminal 2
Wheelchair users have the best setup. There are dedicated accessible bay parking slots on the arrivals level right outside. We can hold there for 10 minutes while you make your way through baggage claim.
Terminal 3
Trickier. From arrivals, the accessible route is through the Skywalk. We plan pickup times on your actual landing time, not when you’re supposed to get there because getting into that place takes BETWEEN 8-12 minutes with mobility aids.
Flight tracking comes standard. We know if your EasyJet flight from Malaga is coming in 40 minutes late. The complimentary 1-hour waiting time is counted from the time your flight actually arrives, not the scheduled.
Flat-Rate Pricing, No Guessing Game
This is real-pricing — what other vendors are hiding behind “request a quote” forms:
| Route | Price Range |
|---|---|
| City centre to airport | £25-35 (standard WAV) |
| Salford/Trafford areas | £30-40 |
| Stockport/South Manchester | £28-38 |
The price—no matter what—stays fixed. Rush hour surge pricing not included. There’s no extra charge for the ramp or securing equipment. What you are quoted is what you pay.
The hard way we learned, pricing transparency is important. In our first year we went with the “call for quote” method. We heard from people who use wheelchairs that they felt as if they were being penalized for their disability. We stopped that immediately.
What Really Counts When It Comes to Accessible Transit
Vehicle age is more than companies think. Our fleet is available with an average age of three years. Ramps wear out. Hydraulic lifts need maintenance. A 7-year-old WAV with 200,000 miles is not going to provide you the same reliability.
Mobility equipment transport experience trounces driving experience in general. We have drivers that „just” drive accessible transfers for 5+ years. They know how to accommodate various wheelchair widths, (24-27 inches is standard, but bariatric chairs can be 30+ inches).
Bookings response time — we usually confirm bookings in under 15 minutes in business hours and not more than a couple of hours overnight. You’re not waiting 3 days for someone to call back “checking availability.”
