Manchester Airport Terminal 3 Smoking Area

Terminal 3 has no smoking area after security. Your last chance to smoke or vape is the outdoor zone outside the terminal entrance, before you join the security queue. If you go through security first, you will not be able to smoke again until you land.

This matters more than it used to. Terminal 3 changed significantly over 2025 and 2026, and a lot of the advice still floating around online is out of date.

Is there a smoking area in Terminal 3 after security?

No. There is no airside smoking terrace, lounge, or outdoor zone anywhere in Terminal 3.

Once you clear security at T3, you are in a completely smoke-free environment until boarding. That covers the departure lounge, bars, restaurants, toilets and gates. The same applies to vapes and heated tobacco.

If you have already read older guides suggesting you could walk over to Terminal 1 for a cigarette, ignore them. Terminal 1 closed on 19 November 2025 and no longer operates.

Where can you smoke at Terminal 3

Smoking is permitted in the designated outdoor zones outside the Terminal 3 entrance, on the departures forecourt. These are landside, before security.

Follow the signage from the entrance. These zones are marked, and they are the only legal place to smoke at T3.

Do not smoke anywhere else on airport property. Smoking outside a designated area at a UK airport is an offence under the Health Act 2006, and enforcement officers can issue an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice. In serious or repeated cases, you can be refused boarding.

What changed at Terminal 3 over 2025 and 2026

This is the part most guides get wrong, so it’s worth being precise:

Terminal 1 closed on 19 November 2025 after more than 60 years, as the final step of Manchester Airport’s £1.3 billion transformation programme.

All former T1 airlines moved to Terminal 2, including easyJet, Emirates, Etihad, Turkish Airlines, and Lufthansa.

The old T1 entrance, security hall, and World Duty Free area were rebranded as part of Terminal 3 on 5 March 2026. Ryanair passengers now enter through this rebranded area to reach T3 gates.

Terminal 3 is being expanded and refurbished using the space freed up by the closure, including a larger departure lounge and new food and drink outlets.

None of this added a smoking area to T3. The rebranded section carries over the old T1 entrance and security hall, but not the old T1 airside smoking room, which is no longer accessible. Terminal 3 remains landside-only for smokers.

If your booking says Terminal 1, it’s out of date. Check your boarding pass or airline app before you travel.

Vaping and e-cigarettes at Terminal 3

Manchester Airport treats vaping exactly like smoking. Manchester Airports Group has banned indoor vaping across its airports since 1 August 2014. This is stricter than UK law requires, and it is enforced.

You cannot vape anywhere inside Terminal 3, landside or airside.

You can vape in the designated outdoor zone outside the terminal.

You cannot vape on the aircraft, and you cannot charge a device in flight.

Vapes and e-cigarettes must go in your hand luggage, never in checked bags, because of the lithium batteries.

One more thing worth knowing: disposable vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025. If you rely on disposables, travel with a rechargeable, refillable device instead. Don’t count on buying one at the airport, as not every outlet stocks them.

Leaving security to smoke: why it usually isn’t worth it

Technically you can exit the departure lounge, smoke outside, and come back through. In practice, very few passengers should.

You have to re-clear security completely: queue again, remove liquids and electronics, the full process. At peak times this can take 30 to 60 minutes. Gate changes, boarding calls and queue surges all happen while you’re outside, and airlines will not hold a flight for you.

If your flight boards in under 90 minutes, don’t do it. Treat the pre-security zone as your final cigarette and plan around that.

Timing your smoke break at Terminal 3

Manchester Airport recommends arriving at least 2 hours before European flights and 3 hours before long-haul. If you smoke, build in an extra 20 to 30 minutes on top so you’re not rushing your last cigarette into a security queue.

A routine that works:

1. Arrive at T3 with your buffer built in
2. Drop bags or check in first
3. Head to the outdoor zone for your last smoke
4. Join the security queue with plenty of time
5. Once airside, switch to nicotine gum, patches or lozenges

Buy your nicotine replacement before you get to the airport. Landside retail at T3 is limited, and once you’re through security you’re committed either way.

If you need to smoke after security: Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is the only terminal at Manchester with an airside smoking area. It’s an outdoor zone near Gate 300, on the upper level where the restaurants are, signposted from the central concourse. It’s one of only a handful in the UK.

This is only useful to you if you are actually flying from T2. You cannot use it as a T3 passenger:

T2 and T3 are separate secure zones. You would have to exit T3 airside entirely, walk 15 to 20 minutes via the Skylink, and clear T2 security, all with no boarding pass for a T2 flight.

Airport staff will not let you through.

So if a smoke break after security genuinely matters to you and your route allows it, check whether your airline flies from T2 before you book. Most carriers now do. Terminal 3 is primarily Ryanair.
