What Sports Teams Actually Need (The Kit Bag Reality)
We’ve been doing sports team transport since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And let me tell you what catches people out every single time. Sports teams have loads of equipment.
It’s not just people. It’s people plus kit bags plus boots plus balls plus water bottles plus coats plus sometimes tackle bags or training equipment. A 5-a-side football team of 6 players means 6 kit bags, 6 pairs of boots, maybe a ball bag, water carrier, first aid kit. That’s serious volume.
Standard saloon car fits 3-4 people with minimal luggage. Sports team? You need a minibus or large MPV for any team over 4 players.
We’ve probably 150-200 sports team transfers over the years. Mostly football (5-a-side, 7-a-side, 11-a-side teams). Some rugby. Occasional cricket or basketball. Mainly youth teams, Sunday league teams, and university teams.

Team Size and Vehicle Requirements
Let me be specific about what fits where because this matters.
| Team Type | Players | Vehicle Needed | Equipment Space | Typical Cost | Per Person |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-a-side | 5-6 players | MPV or small minibus | Tight but works | £60-70 | £10-12 |
| 7-a-side | 7-8 players | 8-seater minibus | Comfortable | £70-90 | £9-11 |
| 11-a-side | 11+ players | Need 2 vehicles | Split team | £120-140 total | £11-13 |
| Small group | 3-4 players | Standard vehicle works | Easy | £40-50 | £10-13 |
5-a-Side Teams (5-6 Players): MPV or small 8-seater works. Kit bags go in the boot or on the seats. Bit cramped if everyone’s tall, but doable. Local match or tournament, this size is manageable in one vehicle.
7-a-Side Teams (7-8 Players): Proper 8-seater minibus needed. This is the sweet spot for team transport. Everyone fits comfortably. Equipment fits. Cost splits well. The most common booking we get for sports teams.
11-a-Side Teams (Full Football or Rugby): Can’t fit 11 players plus equipment in one vehicle. Need two vehicles. Usually, we send an 8-seater plus a standard vehicle, or two 8-seaters. Team splits between vehicles. Total cost £120-140, but split 11 ways, that’s £11-13 each.
The Cost Makes Sense: Parents doing separate car journeys means 3-4 cars. Petrol, parking, and coordination hassle. One minibus for £70-90 split between the team is simpler and often cheaper when you factor in parking fees at venues.
FAQs:
How much does a sports team taxi cost?
Depends on team size and distance. An 8-seater minibus for a local match (10-15 miles) costs £60-80. Longer tournament run (30-40 miles) costs £80-100. Split between 7-8 players, that’s £8-12 each per journey. Return journey same cost. Total day cost for tournament (there and back) is £120-160 total or £15-20 per player. Often cheaper than multiple parents driving separately when you factor in petrol and parking.
What size team can you fit?
8 players maximum in a single minibus with kit bags. 11-a-side teams need two vehicles (usually an 8-seater plus a standard car). 5-6 player teams fit in MPV or small minibus. 3-4 players can use a standard vehicle if the equipment is minimal. Tell us player count and what sport (kit bag size varies) when booking, so we allocate appropriate vehicles.
Can you do regular weekly bookings?
Yes, common for Wednesday training or Saturday matches. Standing weekly booking means the same time, same driver usually, priority slot held for your team. Especially popular for youth teams with season-long training schedules. Payment can be weekly or monthly, depending on the arrangement. Contact us to set up regular team transport for the season.
What about muddy kit after matches?
We get it, sports teams get muddy. We ask for basic consideration – wipe the worst mud off boots, bag up dirty kit, change out of completely soaked shirts if possible. Light mud from training is fine. The entire team, caked in mud after playing in the swamp, needs basic cleanup first. We clean vehicles between jobs, but we can’t have mud destroying the interior for the next passenger. Common sense stuff.
Do you wait at the tournament for the return journey?
Not usually cost-effective. Tournament lasts 4-6 hours. Paying a driver to wait that long costs more than two separate journeys. Better to book the outbound journey in the morning, then book the return journey for the estimated finish time (adjustable if you text us with the actual finish time). If the tournament finish time is genuinely uncertain, call when you’re ready, and we’ll send a vehicle if available.
How far ahead should we book for weekend matches?
Minimum 48 hours, preferably 1 week for weekend matches because Saturday/Sunday slots fill fast. Midweek training can be booked on shorter notice (24 hours usually fine). Tournament transport, especially book early – other teams are also booking transport for the same events. Regular season teams should set up standing weekly bookings at the season start.
