The September First-Week Madness
We’ve been doing student airport transfers since 2018. Licensed under Wolverhampton Council (PHOP445). And let me tell you about September. The first week of September is absolutely mental.
Every single first-year student arriving at Manchester universities. All at once. Within about a 4-day window. Manchester Met has 40,000 students. The University of Manchester has 40,000 students. That’s 80,000 students total, with maybe 30,000-40,000 being new first-years. They all arrive the same week.
Airport pickups are non-stop. Fallowfield, Rusholme, Oxford Road, city centre student accommodation. Back and forth constantly. Every taxi company in Manchester is rammed that week.
We’ve probably done 600-800 student transfers total over the years. About 60% happen in September (term start), 20% in December (Christmas break), 20% in June (summer break). It’s massively concentrated around term times.

Student Areas and Journey Times from Airport
Let me give you specific student areas and realistic times from Manchester Airport.
| Student Area | Distance | Journey Time | Who Lives There | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fallowfield | 6 miles | 20-25 min | Mainly undergrads, big student area | £30-35 |
| Rusholme/Wilmslow Road | 5 miles | 15-20 min | Mixed students, Curry Mile | £25-30 |
| Oxford Road Corridor | 4 miles | 12-18 min | University accommodation, central | £25-30 |
| City Centre | 9 miles | 25-30 min | Private halls, studios | £35-40 |
| Withington | 5 miles | 18-23 min | Quieter, postgrads often | £28-33 |
Fallowfield: The massive student area. Huge student population. Loads of student houses. Victoria Park, Ladybarn, Fallowfield proper. Everyone knows Fallowfield. From the airport takes 20-25 minutes from the airport via A34 and Wilmslow Road.
Oxford Road Corridor: University accommodation along Oxford Road. Owens Park, St Anselm Hall, and various university-owned halls. Central location. Close to both universities. Airport to Oxford Road halls is 12-18 minutes.
City Centre: Private halls like iQ, Unite Students, and other purpose-built student accommodation. Studios and shared flats. More expensive than Fallowfield. Airport to city centre is 25-30 minutes, depending on exact location.
Similar patterns for students at Leeds universities, though Leeds Bradford Airport is their local one.
The Luggage Reality (Why Students Need MPVs)
Here’s what catches people out. Students have way more luggage than holiday travellers.
Typical First-Year Student Arriving September:
- 2 large suitcases (clothes for full term)
- 1 duvet bag (actual duvet in compression bag)
- 1 laptop bag/backpack
- 1-2 boxes (kitchen stuff, books, cables, random items)
- Sometimes a pillow, sometimes sports equipment
That’s 4-6 large items. Standard saloon fits 2-3 suitcases max. You need an MPV or an estate for student moves.
What Parents Don’t Realise: Parents book thinking “it’s just luggage.” They imagine 2 suitcases for a holiday. Then the student rocks up at the airport with 2 massive cases, a duvet bag bigger than them, a box of pots and pans, a laptop bag, and a guitar. The driver’s allocated saloon. The student’s stuff won’t fit. Chaos ensues.
Always mention you’re a student moving in for the term when booking. We’ll allocate an appropriate vehicle. Check our MPV fleet, which handles student luggage volumes properly.
FAQs:
How much does a student airport transfer cost?
Depends on the student’s area. Airport to Fallowfield costs £30-35. Airport to Oxford Road area costs £25-30. Airport to city centre student accommodation costs £35-40. These are total vehicle rates. Solo students pay the full amount. Groups of 3-4, splitting cos,t pay £8-12 each, which is cheaper than the coach. National Express coach is £15-20, so taxi only makes financial sense for groups or students with tons of luggage needing a larger vehicle.
Do you have vehicles for all the students’ luggage?
Yes, but you must mention you’re a student with full-term luggage when booking. Students typically have 2-3 large cases plus a duvet bag plus boxes, which needs MPV or an estate car. The standard saloon only fits 2 cases. If you book an “airport transfer” without mentioning the student luggage volume, the driver arrives in a saloon, and your stuff won’t fit. Tell us “first year student with duvet and boxes”, and we’ll allocatean appropriate vehicle.
Can parents book for students?
Yes, about 80% of student bookings are made by parents. Parent provides the student’s flight details, phone number, and accommodation address. We send confirmation to both parents’ emails and the student’s phone number. Important: make sure the student has the driver’s contact details and knows to text the driver when they land. The student needs booking info on the day, even though the parent paid.
When should we book for the September arrival?
As early as possible. The first week of September is chaos with every Manchester university fresher arriving simultaneously. We take September bookings from July onwards. Book 4-6 weeks ahead if possible for the September term start. Christmas and Easter breaks are quieter; 1-2 weeks’ notice is usually fine. June is busy again with the summer term ending.
What if the student’s flight is delayed?
We track flights automatically for airport pickups. If the flight’s delayed, the pickup time adjusts automatically. The student still needs to text the driver when they’ve actually landed and collected luggage. Parents often panic about delays – don’t stress, the system handles it. The student just needs to text the driver confirming they’re ready for pickup with luggage collected.
Can you pick up multiple students from different flights?
Not efficiently. If two friends are on different flights landing 30 minutes apart at similar times, maybe. But if flights are hours apart or in different terminals, book separate taxis. We can’t have a driver sitting at the airport for 3 hours between pickups. Each student books their own transfer based on their actual flight time. Groups on the same flight can share one taxi and split the cost.
